Sam Yulsman is a pianist and composer with a DMA in composition from Columbia University. A stylistically versatile expert in jazz and classical piano, music theory, composition, and improvisation, he’s performed with a wide array of artists including the Sun Ra Arkestra, the Longmont Symphony, Diego Espinosa, Talea Ensemble, the Westerlies Brass Quartet, Roman Filiu, CJ Camerieri, Alicia Hall Moran, Peter Evans, Tyshawn Sorey, Brandon Lopez, Tim Berne, and Ikue Mori. 

As a composer, he has collaborated with a wide range of leading ensembles and soloists from around the world including JACK Quartet, Ensemble Korea, Séverine Ballon, Distractfold, Julia den Boer, String Noise, Mivos Quartet, and loadbang. Recent honors and awards include a 2021 Charles S. Miller Award from Columbia University, a 2020 Fromm Commission from Harvard University, a 2019 Prix Langage Musical from the Conservatoire Américain and a 2019 Copland House Cultivate Fellowship

As a piano and composition teacher with six years of experience, Sam fosters dynamic, engaging spaces for students to explore the music that inspires them – whether that is learning the subtleties of classical technique, mastering jazz standards, learning their favorite pop music, composing a string quartet, or improvising freely.
