New to Guitar? Here’s the Equipment You’ll Need for Lessons

May 5, 2015

You’ve made the decision to sign up for some guitar lessons in NYC and you are ready to learn and grow in your passion. Are you purchasing a guitar for the first time? Perhaps you are in need of some new gear before you get started. What should you buy? It is worth taking a few extra minutes to consider all of your needs and options before attending your first lessons. No matter what your experience level is, you’ll be defined by the quality of the gear you have. There are a few key things to keep in mind.

When You Can Have It All
First, keep in mind that when you come in for guitar lessons in NYC, you will not have to have every piece of equipment necessary. It is a good idea to call the studio in advance and to discuss what specific items you need. You’ll want to know what is expected and what is not necessary. This will vary from one location to the next. Generally, though, you may find this to be the ideal opportunity to pick and choose equipment that is going to really propel your skills and help you to achieve your goals.

When it comes to being ready, create a wish list for equipment. That is, when your budget allows for it, you may want to consider adding any of these pieces of equipment to the classroom you plan to get started with:
• You’ll want to ensure there is a chair and a music stand available to you. You don’t want to have to share a music stand. It’s best for you and your development of skills to have your own.
• Replacement strings are a big deal. You’ll want to have the right type of strings for your guitar. In addition to this, be sure you have the tools on hand to make the swap at the lessons so you do not have to wait around for this to occur.
• Electronic tuners are also important. Again, this is something to discuss with your instructor before you arrive. However, having a well tuned guitar – even if you do not know how to do this just yet – can make all of the difference.

What else do you need to start learning to play guitar? You’ll want to have several picks, a guitar stand and case, and even a small amp to help you with sound quality. It can also be helpful to have a chord reference book, which is going to help you answer all of the questions you have during the learning process.

Though your guitar instructor is likely to have everything you need to get started, you’ll want to have this type of equipment on hand so that you can go home and practice. Ultimately, you’ll find yourself customizing your equipment to match your playing style and preferences, but having a bottle of guitar polish and a strap on hand for that first day can make a big difference.
